Hard Skills and Soft Skills

Skills are referred to as the capacity to do something well. Skills are simply things learned to perform certain tasks with determined results often within a given amount of time, energy, or both. Skills are abilities that can be developed through life or work experience, study, or activities you do. 

Job skills are competencies required to perform tasks a job requires. Various jobs require different skills, some skills can only be applicable to specific jobs while some can be transferred from one job to another, these skills are referred to as hard skills and soft skills. 

Hard skills are specific technical knowledge and abilities which help people carry different jobs. They are teachable and quantifiable. Hard skills can be developed or obtained via; education, apprenticeship, experience, and training. These skills relate to a particular field. 

They include;

  • SEO Marketing
  • Database management. 
  • Software
  • Multilingual. 
  • Programming language. 
  • Handling of Tools and machines. 

Soft skills are attributes that are not specific to a particular role. They describe how one works both as an individual and as a member of a team or organization. They can be applied to a number of roles and help create and adapt to a positive work environment. These sets of skills are emotionally based as they are mostly related to one’s personality and people skills. 

They include;

  • integrity. 
  • Empathy. 
  • Leadership. 
  • Problem-solving. 
  • Critical thinking. 
  • Communication. 
  • Good work ethic. 
  • Perseverance. 
  • People management. 

Skills are very essential for development, it helps one to be successful and advance in their chosen career, the workplace also uses the combination of both hard skills and soft skills. Possessing both kinds of skills required for a specific job can help convince the employer that you are the best candidate for the job.
